The 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup – the competition’s 14th edition – is 50 days away!

In order to whet your appetite for the region’s premier footballing event, CONCACAF.com takes a look at some Gold Cup facts related to 50.

  • The 50th goal in Gold Cup history was scored in the inaugural edition in 1991, when Benjamin Galindo struck in the 89th minute of Mexico’s 2-0 win over Costa Rica in the match for third place.
  • Costa Rica's 50th Gold Cup goal was scored by Walter Centeno in a 1-1 draw with Haiti on June 9, 2007. 
  • Mexico’s 50th Gold Cup goal was scored by Juan Francisco Palencia in the 65th minute of 4-2 win over Trinidad & Tobago on February 4, 1998. Coincidentally, it was also the 50th match in Gold Cup history.
  • Landon Donovan, the top scorer (18) and with more matches in the Gold Cup (34), scored the USA’s 50th goal in a 5-0 quarterfinal win over Cuba on July 19, 2003.
  • Aldo de Nigris (93’) and Javier Hernandez (99’) in Mexico's 50th Gold Cup match, a 2-0 extra-time win over Honduras in the semifinals on June 22, 2011.
  • Jozy Altidore (15’) and Clint Dempsey (62’) scored in the USA’s 50th Gold Cup match, a 2-0 win over Canada on June 7, 2011.
  • Mexico’s Luis Roberto Alves, the only player to score seven goals in a Gold Cup match (9-0 win over Martinique on July 11, 1993), will turn 50 on May 23, 2017.
