GUWAHATI, India -- Carlos Mejia and Patrick Palacios scored two goals each as Honduras (1W-0D-1L, 3 points) earned a 5-0 win over New Caledonia (0-0-2, 0) on Wednesday at Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium.

With their first victory, the Catrachos took over sole possession of third place in Group E and are level on points with Japan (1-0-1, 3) – a 2-1 loser to France – but behind on goal difference (0 to +4).

Mejia struck for his first goal in the 25th minute, when he slotted in with his left foot from three-yards out after Joshua Canales cross from the right wing rolled through the six-yard box.

Two minutes later, Canales made it 2-0, expertly placing a right-footed free kick from 20-yards out into the right side of the net.

Honduras added struck again before halftime, with Mejia completing his brace by left-footing in from six-yards out off Santiago Cabrera’s right-sided cross.

Palacios punctuated the scoreline with a pair of second-half strikes, doing well to head Axel Gomez’s cross from left in the 51st minute and finishing with his left foot from the edge of the six-yard box thanks to a Asaf Cacho assist.

The win was Honduras’ largest-ever in U-17 World Cup play.

Up Next: Honduras will square off against France at the same venue on Saturday.
