U-17 World Cup: Costa Rica, Guinea draw

GOA, India -- Guinea (0W-1D-1L, 1 point) rallied twice from deficits to draw 2-2 with Costa Rica (0-1-1, 1) in the FIFA U-17 World Cup on Tuesday at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

With the result, the Ticos finished the day third in Group C, five points behind first-place Iran, which earned a 4-0 win over Germany.

Yecxy Jarquin gave Costa Rica 1-0 lead in the 26th minute, when he slotted home at the right post off Andres Gomez’s feed through the six-yard box.

Four minutes later, Guinea leveled through Fandje Toure, who reacted quickly to put away the rebound of an initially saved shot.

In the early moments of the second half, Costa Rica goalkeeper Ricardo Montenegro made a pair of key saves, before Gomez’s header from 18-yards out restored the Ticos’ lead. The 17-year-old forward was in the right place after Guinea goalkeeper Mohamad Camara rushed out to make a block at the penalty spot and the ball popped into the air.

The African responded to equalize in the 81st minute, as Ibrahima Soumah found the back of the net after sprinting the through the right of the side box to finish Toure’s pass.
