DARMSTADT, Germany – Darmstadt 98 announced Sunday that it has signed Trinidad & Tobago international Joevin Jones to a pre-contract on a free transfer from the Seattle Sounders.

The defender/midfielder will join the German Bundesliga 2 side in January 2018 after completing the current Major League Soccer season, which is scheduled to end with the MLS Cup final in December.

“This is a big step for me, to move to Darmstadt 98 and to enter German football after the last two-and-a-half years in the American MLS,” said Jones. “I am very happy for the chance to prove myself at Darmstadt and I cannot wait to start with the club and help them achieve great things.

Jones came to MLS prior to the 2015 season, joining the Chicago Fire after a five-year career in Trinidad & Tobago and Finland. He made his professional debut in 2009 at 17-years-old with DirecTV W Connection and scored 26 goals in helping the club to a pair of TT Pro League titles (2011, 2013). Jones was loaned to HJK Helsinki of the Finnish top division in 2014, making six appearances.

With Chicago, he scored one goal in 28 matches, before moving to the Seattle Sounders in January 2016. Jones currently has three goals in 54 regular-season appearances with the reigning MLS champion.

Since making his international debut with Trinidad & Tobago in a 3-0 loss at Panama in an international friendly on September 7, 2010, Jones has been a consistent presence for the Soca Warriors, earning 62 caps.

He helped T&T earn qualification to its first CONCACAF Gold Cup in six years after a second-place finish in the 2012 Caribbean Cup. Jones recorded his first international goal in a 2015 Gold Cup game against Guatemala. In CONCACAF qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, he has a team-best four goals.

The 25-year-old has scored one goal in eight Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League appearances, netting for W Connection in a 3-2 loss at Guatemala’s Xelaju on September 18, 2012.
