TOLUCA, Mexico – Barring a momentous reversal of fortune, Toluca looks to be on the way to making a trip to the 2017 Liga MX Clausura semifinals.

In the midweek, the Red Devils posted an impressive win over Santos in their quarterfinal series opener.

Despite his team’s seemingly comfortable cushion, Toluca goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera is taking absolutely nothing for granted in the title chase.

"We have the goal of being champion, but, in order to reach it, we must go by step and every step must be firm,” he said in a press conference on Friday, a day before Santos visits for the second leg.  “Even in the last match of the regular season (also against Santos), the team also played well and we have to do it because it is what we want…to get the eleventh star.”

Prior to Wednesday’s 4-1 triumph at the Guerreros, Toluca went winless in five consecutive matches (0W-2D-3L), scoring four goals over that stretch.  Despite those struggles, it managed to flip the switch and start postseason brightly.

"Toluca is a team that does not complain.  It works.  It’s an experienced team,” finished Talavera.  “The work and the humility of enduring many things is what has carried us, as well as playing as one.  We enter as 11, but we are one.

“Games that we seemed to have to won, people saw as easy and we lost them.  All of that reduces confidence a little confidence.  Now we are on the other side.  In the playoffs, we are strong and we have the full team, that’s what stands out to me.  Confidence, we did have it, but now it's more solid than ever.”

Toluca has lifted the trophy 10 times previously, but not since the 2012 Apertura.
