SAN NICOLAS DE LOS GARZA, Mexico – Tigres head coach Ricardo Ferretti was left to rue his team’s missed opportunities after 1-1 draw with visiting Pachuca in the first leg final of the 2016/17 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday night.

The host fell behind 1-0 in the third minute on an own-goal as Raul Lopez’s free kick took a vicious deflection off Eduardo Vargas, but leveled slightly less than 30 minutes later through Ismael Sosa.

Two spurned opportunities, however, will stay in the minds of Tigres fans -- Andre-Pierre Gignac pulled a shot past the left post with the goal gaping and Vargas had a 67th-minute penalty kick saved.

“We had chances and very clear ones,” said Ferretti. “Naturally, we were not accurate, but I think that [Pachuca head coach Diego] Alonso should believe the same as I do. It’s a coin flip. I’m happy with the team’s performance, but not so much the result. The two need a goal and the situation does not change much. Now we have to go to Pachuca to play and we’ll see then.”

Appearing in the SCCL final for a second consecutive year, Ferretti was quick to reject the notion that his team was suffering from bad luck.

“I don’t think it is a question of luck and we can’t be depending on that,” the 63-year-old finished. “It’s good to have in your favor…like Pachuca had on their goal, a deflection and all that…but I look to see what my job is, which is to prepare us to the fullest.”

The second leg will be played on April 26 at the Estadio Hidalgo, site of Pachuca’s 1-0 win over Cruz Azul in the second leg of the 2009/10 SCCL final, a result that clinched its fourth CONCACAF title.
