MONTERREY, Mexico – There is a cool, calm confidence about Tigres these days, and it stems from head coach Ricardo Ferretti, whose team hosts Monterrey in the 2017 Liga MX Apertura final, first leg on Thursday.

“I hope that the team has a great attitude and plays football well, that is what we are going to look to do in these next two matches,” said Ferretti in a press conference on Wednesday. “I’m confident in my group of players. We respect our opponent, but we are not scared of them. We are very focused on this final.”

It will be a battle between the regular season’s top two sides. Monterrey finished in first place with an 11W-4D-2L record, while second-place Tigres went 9-5-3. In their only Apertura meeting, the table-topping Rayados earned a 2-0 victory on a Juninho own-goal (46’) and Aviles Hurtado’s 11th goal of the season (50’).

After scoring one goal or fewer in six consecutive games, UANL’s offense got back on track in its last outing, a 3-0 win over visiting Club America in the semifinal, second leg as Enner Valencia (56’, 72’) and Andre-Pierre Gignac (76’ pen) got on the scoresheet.

Ferretti is optimistic that the goal-scoring ways will continue and the defense will remain sturdy (six goals allowed in the last 10 games).

“I am not one for stats because all matches are different, the phases are different” he finished. “But, hopefully, we can maintain that momentum and win the final.”
