SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras – After heading into the last matchday of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying in fifth-place, Honduras (3W-4D-3L, 13 points) was delighted to exit it with a spot in the intercontinental playoff against Australia thanks to Tuesday’s 3-2 win over first-place Mexico (6-3-1, 21).

The Catrachos ultimately finished fourth in the Hexagonal table after the United States fell 2-1 at Trinidad & Tobago.

“We have taken a very important step. Obviously, we believed that the objective could be reached. It ended up being the playoff and in the end it was deserved,” said defender Maynor Figueroa. “We thank God and this blessed fan base that supported us in everything.

“We are still alive and I’m happy with each one of my teammates.”

Honduras, which has competed in the last two World Cups, will host Australia in the first leg of their series on November 9.

“We are going to analyze Australia and see what they have,” Figueroa remarked. “We will watch videos of them. We have time to do it.”
